Eye Examinations

Woman having an Eye Examination

Private and NHS eye examinations

We offer private and NHS eye examinations at our practice here in Ballyclare. Having your eyes tested regularly is one of the best ways to improve your eye health. Our eye examinations check up on your vision and examine your eye health as a whole. Because no two eyes are the same, we offer a personalised eye examination service to ensure that you get the tests and care you need.

What to expect in your eye examination?

Your eye examination will last for approximately 40 minutes, to allow time for your optometrist to thoroughly examine your eyes and vision. During this time, you will be asked to complete a series of tests which are all designed to assess your visual status (whether you might be long or short-sighted) and eye health. None of these are difficult or painful in any way, but are important for your optometrist to be able to accurately prescribe any eyewear, if this is necessary.

You will also have the opportunity to have retinal photographs taken as part of your examination. Our digital retinal camera allows us to see a much wider section of the back of your eye, which consequently enables a thorough check of your eye health. Many eye conditions, including glaucoma and macular degeneration, can be detected in the very early stages by retinal screening. This in turn allows faster and more effective treatment for you.

Once your examination is complete, your optometrist will explain their findings to you, including any updates to your prescription that might be required. They’ll also be happy to answer any questions you have, as well as taking the time to recommend suitable products for your needs, wants and lifestyle.

Enhanced Eye Examinations with an OCT scan

Enhanced eye examinations with OCT technology

Providing the best care requires using the best equipment. Our practice uses the latest technology, including our OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) scan. An OCT scan as part of your eye examination provides you with an in-depth picture of your overall eye health and your vision, including screening for eye diseases such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.
